Eric Vitoff is an Asbury Park-based songwriter, guitarist and singer whose work spans indie rock, folk and ethereal ambient soundscapes. Rooted in thoughtful songwriting and inventive guitar work, he moves between intimate acoustic moments and expansive instrumental pieces, often incorporating looping and effects to create richly layered arrangements. Vitoff wrote “What Heaven Looks Like” and invited Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter and producer Kristen Joselle to sing with him on the recorded version. Joselle’s background draws from soul and folk with diasporic rhythms woven throughout, and her approach brings together the passion of soul music and the truth-telling of spoken word in her performance on the recording.
The recorded version features Vitoff’s nylon-string guitar articulated alongside Cale Hawkins’s gently percussive piano. The arrangement includes background “ooo’s” and Vitoff’s harmony vocals, and the recording places an elegant piano solo midway through the song. The lyrics quoted on the release read, “We stared at snowy peaks from the Caribbean coast/ As water kissed the sand with quiet waves between our toes/ Setting sun revealed the red sandstone in the sky/ Constellations spoke our names and called us from on high,” and those lines appear as part of the song’s narrative.
